Regional groupings?

Is there any particular source for these groupings (i.e. Prospect Heights being in Northwestern Brooklyn rather than Central Brooklyn)? Or did someone just throw this together based on their own personal judgment?

Obviously there's a lot of room to disagree about these things (personally I'd put Prospect Heights in Central Brooklyn), but if Wikipedia is presenting these groupings as though they're definitive, I really think there should be a source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.86.248.246 ( talk) 16:17, 28 December 2021 (UTC) reply

This certainly can't be a list of "all" neighborhoods in Brooklyn, because it leaves out Homecrest. That may be a small neighborhood, but it had the distinction (when I was growing up there in the 1950's) of being one of the most efficient training areas for young pre-mafiosi boys, with a highly organized and efficient gang of tiny hoodlums operating just around the corner from me.

Nricardo: Agreed. I added numerous neighborhoods and removed the word "all".

Taco: I took the original list and added the neighborhood names recognized by the dept of city planning (and linked to their map). I wonder, though, if these links should now all be re-written, i.e. "Gravesend, Brooklyn|Gravesend", because I see already a conflict with "Seagate", linked as it is, pointing to the hard drive maker. Opinions?

Taco: ok, I've taken a stab at it using the "Gravesend" example above; have not touched links that already have leaf pages linked to them...maybe later.

This is way too long for a straight list and should be divided under geographic headings on the page; I'm not sure how to do this, It would be cool to do it by the original towns or the old wards, and most official to do it by Community District, but I imagine Northern Brooklyn/Southern Brooklyn/Eastern Brooklyn/Western Brooklyn/Central Brooklyn will be most useful and familiar. I'll try this out; I hope the placement of individual neighborhoods will not be too controversial.-- Pharos 05:02, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Nice try, but...

I think it's really worse as a table. Takes less space, but it's harder to follow, with neighborhoods as running text instead of one per line. -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 02:11, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Naming conflict

I think there's some mixup between Ditmas Park and Prospect Park South. I've always figured them to be the same area. Realtors have renamed Greenwood Heights "South Slope." That doesn't mean we have to. But as time passes, the realtors usually get their way, as more and more residents, told the new name by realtors, replace the residents who remember the old name. Neighborhood naming convention

In case anyone hadn't noticed, Wikipedia:Communities strawpoll is voting on a uniform naming convention for all neighborhoods of U.S. cities. The proposition currently leading by a wide margin would apparently entail renaming most New York City neighborhood articles to something like neighborhood, New York, New York. older ≠ wiser 19:01, 23 August 2006 (UTC) reply

Move of Park Slope

Park Slope is more central Brooklyn than northwestern. exspecially if you have Bed-Stuy and Prospect South in there since Bed Stuy is north of Prospect Park (and Prospect Heights really) and Prospect South would be due south, it makes more sense there. -- Vsthesquares 17:11, 25 March 2007 (UTC) reply

I've added one. I created it initially for Wikitravel, so it's in that site's preferred format. If there is something I could do to make it more in line with how Wikipedia likes its maps formatted, please let me know.
My map also does not align perfectly to the list on this page. This list is pretty messy, and has pages for weird subdivisions of neighborhoods, which I've only heard of in a promotional, real estate context. There is plenty of overlap between the different neighborhoods listed here, so that too is not captured in the map. Agreed, beautiful. Some of the borders are erroneous. For instance, the modern neighborhood of Gravesend, unlike the defunct town of Gravesend, does not extend all the way to Bay Parkway. It ends at Stillwell. Dave Golland ( talk) 14:30, 20 July 2009 (UTC) reply

All I can currently come up with are these Wikilinks: Bath Beach, Brooklyn, Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, and Gravesend, Brooklyn. Oh, wait--there was a New York Times article last summer which discussed real estate in Gravesend and included a map limiting the neighborhood to Stillwell. I'll try to find that. Here it is: [2]. This one too is problematic in that it extends Gravesnd to 26th Avenue in Bath Beach (and calls that Bensonhurst!). Intuitively I think that Bath Beach includes all of the Numbered Bay Streets on that grid (Bay 42nd Street, Bay 43rd Street, etc.). Dave Golland ( talk) 15:29, 22 July 2009 (UTC) reply
