Bad Wording on the page

In History, under 'Spanish Era', dehumanizing, offensive language is used to describe the Native Americans. e.g., "The surviving Indians were pacified..." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.97.92.234 ( talk) 07:37, 18 February 2020 (UTC) reply

Kern County child abuse cases

There really should be a section for this or at least a subsection. Just having it in the history makes it hard to find when you are looking for it. -- Hadees ( talk) 06:43, 18 April 2009 (UTC) reply

Disagree. This was a very unpleasant circumstance, but one that could be simply referred to, with a link to the longer article on the subject. Sincerely, GeorgeLouis ( talk) 16:10, 17 August 2009 (UTC) reply

Largest open-pit mine?

Regarding the line:

Kern County is home to the world's largest open pit mine at Boron, which mines borax.

I believe this to be false. It is California's largest open-pit mine, and it may be the world's largest borate mine, but there's several larger open-pit mines in the world.

Media Market

Regarding the comment that Kern County is one of TWO counties split by Nielsen into two media marketplaces. While this is certainly notable, I believe there are are more than two in California alone. Off the top of my head I can think of Riverside (split between Los Angeles/Palm Springs/Phoenix) and Solano (split between San Francisco and Sacramento). To make things even more interesting in the case of Riverside, stations from the El Centro-Yuma DMA are more considered the "local market" in the Phoenix DMA viewing area, and at least one TV station from San Diego is received in the Temecula-Murrieta area (Los Angeles DMA). I believe San Bernardino for statistical purposes is considered Los Angeles DMA, but Arbitron, a former Nielsen competitor, placed the eastern half of San Bernardino in its "Phoenix ADI", and I believe a few Las Vegas stations are received in this area as well. Anyway getting on a tangent, here as it is not germane to the case of Kern County, just pointing out that I believer there are more than two in California alone. -- Larry G 09:39, 27 July 2007 (UTC)jhghjkghu reply

Agriculture

This article doesn't say anything about agriculture. There is a lot of cultivated land in Kern County. Add something if you run across any numbers. User_talk:David Jordan

Notability

The single most notable thing about Kern County is that it's the setting for The Grapes Of Wrath. I can't believe that that's not even mentioned in the article. I mean, I understand it's not very flattering, but it's what the place is known for. How is it not even mentioned? Anonymous

???? The Grapes of Wrath was set in Oklahoma, and Santa Clara County, where Steinbeck also resided, when he wrote it. It was not set in Kern County. Irshgrl500 ( talk · contribs) 08:55, 1 October 2012 (UTC) reply

Huh? Slow answer, but: That's not true. It starts in Oklahoma, goes across Route 66, and ends up in Weedpatch Camp, which is very much in Kern County -- and is still a labor camp. --jpgordon ::==( o ) 05:56, 5 January 2014 (UTC) reply

A shorter lead

If anybody has the time (I don't right now), the lead should be shorter, with less detail. Sincerely, GeorgeLouis ( talk) 16:08, 17 August 2009 (UTC) reply

Geographic Area

I believe Kern County is the Third Largest county in geographic area for California not the "contiguous United States". Can someone double check this, I couldn't find were the US census lists counties by geographic size. Many websites state Kern as third largest in CA and Coconino County, Arizona as Second Largest in US. Inyo County claims to be third largest in US, see: http://www.inyocounty.us/Sheriff/ Braymond ( talk) 18:00, 8 December 2009 (UTC) reply

Re: History/American phase: Article claims that Buena Vista County (proposed county prior to establishment of Kern County in 1866) had until 1859 to be formally organized, but failed to do so. I do not find any documentation supporting 1859 deadline for Buena Vista County. Rather, I find 2 pertinent acts. The first (1855 Stats, Chap. 161, April 30,1855) sets an August 1, 1855 deadline, which if not met, is extended to August 1, 1856. The second (1856 Stats, Chap. 81, April 16,1856) merely changes boundaries of proposed Buena Vista County, but does not extend deadline from August 1, 1856. I have searched index of California Legislative Acts from 1855 through 1859 and do not find any legislaion further extending deadline to 1859. I will wait 30 days for others to correct my observation, and if no correction, will change article to show 1856, rather than 1859, deadline for proposed Buena Vista County deadline. Re: History/American Era: Article claims that in 1866, Kern County was formed from southern portion of Tulare County, part of Los Angeles County and part of San Bernardino County. The legislation initially creating Kern County mentions only Tulare and Los Angeles Counties as sources. (Calif. 1865-1866 Stats., Chap. 569.) I have searched that entire volume of California statutory archives and find no other 1866 legislation expanding Kern County territory, from San Bernardino County or elsewhere. Thus, the article is at least erroneous in declaring that territory was taken from San Bernardino County in 1866 to form part of Kern County. What I have said so far does not rule out the possibility of such occurring subsequent to 1866. However, suggesting that this is not the case is the Wikipedia article on California Counties, which lists only Tulare and Los Angeles Counties as the source for Kern County and also the Wikipedia article on San Bernardino County which mentions a later removal of territory from San Bernardino County in the formation of Riverside County, but not mentioning any removal of territory from San Bernardino County relative to Kern County. Finally, the current article on Kern County does not cite any source as authority for claim that territory was transferred from San Bernardino County to Kern County, either at the time of the latter county's formtion or at any later time. Accordingly, I will wait 30 days to see if anyone suggests a basis for retaining San Bernardino County as a source of a portion of Kern County, and if none is forthcoming, I plan to delete reference to San Bernardino County in this part of the article. Serious issue with missing CDPs

There are are lot of CDPs in Kern County that are not mentioned anywhere in the correct section on this page, and also don't have Wikipedia pages even though they are automatically notable enough through Wikipedia:GEOLAND. You can see the municipalities of the county by zooming in on this official Census map: https://data.census.gov/cedsci/map?q=Kern%20County,%20California&layer=VT_2020_160_00_PY_D1&mode=selection&loc=35.2951,-119.0375,z7.7349 ('Place' layer on and centered on Kern County). Many of the places surrounding Bakersfield are not anywhere on Wikipedia! BhamBoi ( talk) 08:32, 12 November 2022 (UTC) reply

And you could perhaps tell us which those are? We list 50 or so CDPs, but it's possible some were missed. --jpgordon 𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 15:07, 12 November 2022 (UTC) reply
Partial List:
Some more in the area have pages, but they need to be expanded to include the census demographics. See East Bakersfield, California, El Adobe, California, Old River, California, Pumpkin Center, California,.
I actually think you can see a lot of the redlinks in the CDP section of the Kern County template. Template:Kern County, California BhamBoi ( talk) 18:07, 12 November 2022 (UTC) reply
Why not just actually create the pages as appropriate? --jpgordon 𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 18:27, 12 November 2022 (UTC) reply
