It must me noted that
कमल (Spelled in English as Kamal or Kamala) is masculine. It does mean the lotus (flower).
कमला (Spelled Kamala, Kamla or Kamalaa) is feminine. Literally it means "of/associatd with the lotus. It implies a goddess sitting/standing on the lotus, in Hinduism, Buddhism or Jainism. See for example, examples from Sanchi
Agreed. Is it quite common that names ending "-a" are feminine in Sanskrit? I recall similar semantics in Latin.
