Meant to be in Barcelona?

There are literally hundreds of websites claiming that Gustave Eiffel originally pitched his idea for a tower to Barcelona but that the people living there rejected it so and Barcelona therefore continues loses millions in tourist revenue every year.

I came to Wikipedia to get the NPOV and hoped to find a study of this rumour. I am saddened to see it isn't mentioned at all and that this task has not be taken on by Wikipedia experts and editors. Being able to use the resources of millions of people is one of the greatest things about Wikipedia.

A quick Google will give you many links headed "Unusual facts", "Things you didn't know", "Believe it or not" or "You won't believe this fact, but..." which claim that he offered it to the Spanish City.

Readers Digest has an article entitled "19 Mind-Blowing Eiffel Tower Facts You’ve Never Heard Before" and under the subheader "Spain didn’t want it" claim "Eiffel originally pitched his tower to the city of Barcelona, Spain. They rejected it, worried it would be an unwieldy eyesore." [1] https://www.rd.com/list/eiffel-tower-facts/

As a source Readers Digest link to an article on the "Mental Floss" website which claims "Believe it or not, the Eiffel Tower was originally supposed to be in Barcelona. But thinking the thing would end up looking like an eyesore, the city rejected Gustave Eiffel's plans, and he was forced to repitch the project elsewhere. Luckily, Eiffel found a home for his idea in Paris, where the Tower could serve as the main archway for the 1889 International Exposition." [2] https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/18579/origin-eiffel-tower

In contrast I found ONE (1) link (to Barcelona Yellow) telling us it's totally untrue and just an urban myth. It claims "..a study of all official planning documents for the Barcelona Exposition have revealed that no formal or official offer was ever received from Eiffel". But unless we gain access and make the same study we only have the website's author's word on this. And as always the absence of information in a study does not totally rule it out. So where do we go from here?

Can anyone take this on? Surely the truth is out there although I suppose such a claim can only ever be proven and never disproven as an hitherto unknown document could come to light tomorrow with the ultimate proof that the tower was indeed offered to Barcelona. 78.82.80.49 ( talk) 06:27, 13 February 2023 (UTC) reply

Here's a load more that say it's not true (you'll have to use a translator). See WP:FRINGE.

UNESCO World Heritage

It is a part of Paris, Banks of Seine which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Shouldn’t UNESCO World Heritage Site be written on that page? BeyazAtlıŞövalye ( talk) 21:59, 6 July 2023 (UTC) reply

In the first paragraph, "Constructed from 1887, it is named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower." "Constructed from 1887" seems like it should be a range such as "from 1887 to 1889" or "construction began in 1887" AsianAmericanVisibility ( talk) 14:00, 27 September 2023 (UTC) reply

Convoluted and surprising section about Haiti and the financing of the Eiffel Tower

I read the article of the New York Times that this section sources, and did my own research, and I think the link between the activities of the CIC in Haiti and the Eiffel Tower is very convoluted. The CIC was not the only bank financing the Eiffel Tower, and the revenue from Haiti was very far from being the only source of revenue of the bank. The link the New York Times makes with the Eiffel Tower in their article is more an exaggeration to get a political message across than factual veracity, and I don't see the relevance of talking about Haiti here, as it is already explained in more fitting articles. Steps

The official website has 1,665. 327 + 347 + (991) = 1,665.

It says 1,802 when opened. 360 + 380 + 1,062 = 1,802. Implies only one change: in 1983. https://www.toureiffel.paris/en/news/visit/take-stairs-and-discover-eiffel-tower-new-way

Many sites say it opened with 1,710.

No site (that I could find) reliably cites 1,792.

One with 1,792, has a typo (in a different spot: 564, should be 364). It says changes were made in 1900. https://www.wonders-of-the-world.net/Eiffel-Tower/Renovations-of-the-Eiffel-tower.php

No site (that I could find) could tell me when the third level stairs were closed to the public. But 1900 seems likely.

Note: there are 3 posts in Archives asking about Steps.
