Long Island is famous for not having a corporate economy. They have only outdated, smokestack industries that remain because they have nowhere else to go. The bulk of its jobs are from the government or non-profit sector, such as with its large healthcare system or Brookhaven Labs. There is one Fortune 500 company in Suffolk County that remains out of what was once about 15 for Nassau and Suffolk. It may have been even more in its earlier history. Long Island - both Nassau and Suffolk County have a substantial amount of old wealth, that has been reinvested elsewhere and keeps the consumer economy of Long Island afloat. But a good job in Suffolk County, Long Island is working in Rite-Aid or a supermarket. There are virtually no whitecollar jobs remaining in Suffolk County. Even though many companies were founded on Long Island, they have since relocated to other parts of the NY metropolitan region or other parts of the U.S. or globe. CA (once called Computer Associates) has largely relocated to its location in Hyderabad,India. Others such as Entenmanns, relocated their operations to New Jersey and other locations in the U.S.

However, this article provides an entirely different picture using outdated information and references. Its demise accelerated when the giant defense manufacturer, Grumman, was purchased by another company and relocated to another part of the U.S. Long Island has never recovered since. In fact, many of the associated industries that supported Grumman's supply chain, relocated as well. That is what this article should detail, but it is does not.
