Official census date vs. actual survey dates

The US Census Bureau states that "... the 1830-1880 and 1900 censuses were as of June 1..." The image of the 1850 census return included with this article (and other 1850 census returns I have cited) all bear dates later in the year. The only explanation is that the official record fails to acknowledge that "logistics" of that time meant that the census could only be carried out if it progressed over several months.
