The Romanian Sign Language (
Romanian: Limba semnelor române, LSR)[3] is the
sign language used by deaf people in
Romania.[4] In Romania, the first organization dedicated to people with hearing impairments was the Romanian Society of the Deaf-Mute, established on 9 November 1919.[5] It was continued by the Romanian Association of the Deaf-Mute (1952), and the
National Association of the Deaf from Romania [
ro] (Asociația Națională a Surzilor din România, ANSR, 1995).[6]
^a Sign-language names reflect the region of origin. Natural sign languages are not related to the spoken language used in the same region. For example, French Sign Language originated in France, but is not related to French. Conversely,
ASL and
BSL both originated in English-speaking countries but are not related to each other; ASL however is related to
French Sign Language.
