The madhalla is a traditional hat used in
Yemen and worn by women.[1][2][3][4] The hats have a wide circular brim and a peaked top.[5] The straw hats are peaked to keep the wearer cool in hot temperatures.[2] Being almost two feet tall, the design promotes air circulation within the hat.[4] They have been noted to resemble witch hats.[1][3][6] It is made from
plaited strips of
date palm (nakhl,
Arabic: نخل) leaves.[5][7][8] They are often worn in
Hadhramaut by female
herders and field workers who also wear black
abayas.[1][2][3][4][9] The hat can be obtained at some
souqs.[1]
