he Gare de Lyon on the Boule-vard Diderot. The Seine, which enters Paris inthe southeast at Bercv, :ibout a mile below itsjunction with the Marne, is spanned by 32bridges. It leaves the city at Point du Jour inthe southwest, having divided it in two parts, andhaving formed the two islands of La Cite andSaint-Louis, which are both covered with build-ings. The river at Paris is from 300 to 500 ftetwide. The most celebrated and ancient of thebridges are the Pont Xotre Dame, dating from1.500, and the Pont Xeuf. begun in 1578. coiji-pleted by Henry IV. in 1004, and thoroughlyrestored in 1852, The latter, which crosses theSeine at the lower end of the Ile-de-la-Cite, is1080 feet long, and abuts near the middle on asmall peninsula planted with trees whicli form abackground to the equestrian statue of Henry IV,,which stands in the central open space on thebridge. Among the most recent, and one of themost striking, is the Pout Alexandre Hi., namedin honor of the Czar, and the Pont Mirabeau,connecting Auteuil and Grenelle. These bridgesall communicate directly with the spacious quays,planted with trees, which line both banks of theSeine, and which, together with the boulevards,give characteristic beauty to the city. Althoughthe most ancient quays—as the Quai des Augus-tins and the Quai de la Megisserie—date from thefourteenth century, the greatest part of thesemagnificent embankments, measuring 12 miles inextent, is due to Napoleon I. and Napoleon HI.
