Description Budai (sometimes called Laughing Buddha) carved from serpentine, height 8 cm (3 in),This is a historical Chinese monk who is venerated as Maitreya Buddha in Chan Buddhism. His jolly nature and humorous personality distinguish him from most Buddhist masters or figures. He is almost always shown smiling or laughing, hence his nickname in Chinese, the "Laughing Buddha".
