Expo 2030 ( Arabic: إكسبو 2030) is an upcoming World Expo organised and sanctioned by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), which will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It will take place for five months during the second half of 2030 and the beginning of 2031.The opening ceremony is scheduled for to be held on 1 October 2030 and the closing is scheduled for 31 March 2031. Riyadh will be the second Arab city to host the Expo after Dubai, United Arab Emirates in 2020. [1] [2]
Theme
The theme for the expo is "The Era of Change: Together for a Foresighted Tomorrow" with sub-themes of " A Different Tomorrow", "Climate Action" and "Prosperity for All".
Candidature process
Russia was the first to submit a bid, with a submission for Moscow [3] on 29 April 2021. [4] This opened a six-month window for other submissions to be made by 29 October. [4] Following five conferences to attract attention for a 2030 bid, [5] South Korea submitted a proposal for Busan on 23 June 2021. [4] Italy was the third country to submit a bid, proposing the city of Rome as host city. [6] Ukraine submitted a bid for Odesa on 15 October. [7] Saudi Arabia submitted a bid for Riyadh on 29 October. [8]
On 29 October 2021, BIE confirmed five bids for the Expo 2030: [9] Russia had proposed a bid for Moscow, but withdrew in May 2022 following its military invasion of Ukraine. [10] Ukraine had proposed a bid for Odesa, but was excluded in June 2023 due to the Russian invasion of the country, leaving three bids left in the running. In the final vote for hosting nation on 28 November, Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, was elected as the host city of World Expo 2030. [11] [12]
