- April 20 - Assassination attempt on Tsar Alexander II by Alexander Soloviev. Soloviev shot five times from his revolver but failed to hit Alexander II.
August
- August 15 - The revolutionary organization Land and Liberty split into the terrorist wing Narodnaya Volya and the political wing Black Repartition.

- December - The Narodynaya Volya group plans a train explosion, but fails to kill the Tsar.
